Biosketch

In an era where responsible actions that aim at social good have become a necessity, able police officers play a major role in ushering in the goal. Among them, one name stands head and shoulders above the rest. Meet P Vijayan, a 1999 batch IPS officer, who is credited with many a successful task that has scored all the top points.

Currently the IGP Ernakulam Range – Intelligence, IGP Ernakulam Range – Armed Police Battalions and official-in-charge of the Kerala Railway Police, P Vijayan IPS has to his credit mentored and put on track the much successful Student Police Cadet project that has already travelled beyond Kerala's boundaries to be adopted by many a state administration in full force.

During his decade and a half long career, P Vijayan IPS has served as District Police Chief in the Districts of Kasaragod, Malappuram, Ernakulam (Rural) and Thiruvananthapuram (Rural). He has also served as Commissioner of Police in Kochi City, Kozhikode City, Thrissur City and Thiruvananthapuram City. He is the first and only police official to have held the post of Commissioner of Police in all four Commissionerates of Kerala.

Since joining service under Government of Kerala, Sri Vijayan IPS has served as Commandant of the Kerala Armed Police Battalions 1 & 5, both located in Thrissur, on three occasions

Immediately prior to being IGP Ernakulam Range, P Vijayan IPS headed the police organization of Thiruvananthapuram, the capital city of the state, as its Police Commissioner. Commencing his policing career as Assistant Police Superintendent (Kanhangad) in Kasaragod District in October 2001, P Vijayan IPS has served the state with distinction as District Police Chief in the Districts of Kasaragod, Malappuram, Ernakulam (Rural) and Thiruvananthapuram (Rural), as also as Commissioner of Police in Kochi City, Kozhikode City, and Thrissur City.

Born in Puthurmadhom, Kozhikode, Kerala, P Vijayan attended the local Government School during his early years. He went on to earn a Master's degree in Economics from the Calicut University. Before being art of the Indian Civil Service in 1999, P Vijayan also had professional stints both as an educational researcher and lecturer.
Married to Dr Beena IAS, currently Director, National Rural Health Mission, Kerala, the couple has two school-going children. In April 2008, the P Vijayan IPS and Dr Beena IAS were honored with the Model Official Couple Award from South Indian Bank.
